Homework Policy:
Dear UE Parents: After much research, consideration, and discussion, we have decided to change the homework requirements for Upper Elementary students. We strongly feel that our students work very hard during the school day and would be best served by participating in more family activities after school; therefore, although we are unable to eliminate homework altogether, we are lightening the load in the hopes that this goal may be achieved and that students’ and parents’ stress levels may be alleviated. As such, below, please review the amended plans:

Reading:
Reading Homework will not be extensive, but you can expect that on Making Meaning weeks, students will be expected to read each night for a certain period of time (parent signature required), and on Great Books weeks, they will be expected to read the assigned story (parent signature required), as well as do some short assignments. Each Reading teacher (Ms. Curcuru, Mrs. Wittcoff, and Mrs. Young) has a Reading homework page in the UE Cultural section on the BCMCS website. Please refer to that page weekly for assignments. Failure to complete this homework will result in missing recess.

Writing and Cultural:
Periodically, projects and other works may be assigned for homework in your child’s cultural class. Not all classes require this, and it does not occur weekly. Many of these projects and assignments are actually great opportunities for parents and students to work together. These will be outlined in your child’s teacher’s section on the UE Cultural page. Please check this daily, as students have cultural classes 4 days a week. Writing homework may be given more often, perhaps weekly, particularly for 5th years. The assignments will be given on Mondays and will be due the following Monday. Normally, these assignments stem from work not finished during the writing period. Please check the Writing and Cultural Homework page for your child’s grade. Failure to complete and return assignments will result in missing recess the next day.

Rosetta Stone: Updated expectations will be given once the school year starts, but please note that students should be spending at least ½ hour each week working on foreign languages via DuoLingo at home. Please note: We strongly encourage you, as parents, to spend time with your child on other educational experiences: PLEASE read with your child. Cook with your child. This is great for following directions, measurement, and even sequencing for writing preparation. Play board games and do puzzles with your child. The one thing we do need is for you to work on math facts with your child, if he/she has not memorized them. Students at this age should preferably not need to count on their fingers.

If you need suggestions for helping your child with this, please contact your child’s teacher. We are happy to help. If you have any questions in general, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher: [email protected], [email protected], khirst@bcmcs, or [email protected].
